Five Climate-Smart Practices Farmers Can Explore

Image
Climate change does not affect every farm in exactly the same way. Some farmers may experience delayed rainfall, prolonged dry periods or unusually high temperatures, while others may face flooding, soil erosion, changing pest patterns or excessive rainfall. These changes can make farming more difficult and increase the risks associated with agricultural production.   For farmers, the challenge is not simply to produce more food today, but to build farming systems that can continue producing under changing environmental conditions.   This is where  climate-smart agriculture  becomes important.   Climate-smart agriculture involves practical approaches that can help farmers improve productivity, strengthen resilience to climate-related risks and, where possible, reduce the environmental impact of farming.   Importantly, climate-smart farming does not always require expensive machinery, sophisticated irrigation systems or advanced digital techno...

What Is Climate-Smart Agriculture?

Image
Climate change is changing the conditions under which farmers operate. Rainfall may start later than expected, dry periods may become longer, temperatures may rise, floods may damage farms, and pests and diseases may appear in places or seasons where they were previously less common. These changes can make farming more uncertain and increase the risks faced by farming households. For farmers, the response cannot simply be to produce more. The challenge is to  produce efficiently, prepare for changing conditions, protect natural resources and strengthen the ability of farms to withstand climate-related shocks . This is where  Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA)  becomes important. Climate-smart agriculture is an approach to farming that seeks to achieve three broad goals:  increase agricultural productivity and incomes, strengthen resilience and adaptation to climate change, and reduce or avoid greenhouse-gas emissions where possible . Importantly, climate-sm...
